Does Botox Work for Excessive Sweating?

Let's talk about sweating. it's something we all do. It is our body’s cooling system. Changes in outside temperature, your body temperature and your emotional state can cause sweating.

There are two different types of sweat glands. One kind is located all over your body and produces a light, odorless sweat. The other kind are concentrated in hair follicles of the scalp, underarms and groin. These produce a heavier, fatty sweat with a distinctive odor. When this sweat mixes with bacteria on your skin it produces that distinctive smell that we all refer to as body odor.

Some people have a condition called hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating. Primary focal hyperhidrosis involves sweating in one or more “focal” areas of the body such as under the arms, palms of hands or soles of the feet. This type usually starts in childhood and is often hereditary. Secondary generalized hyperhidrosis is a condition that causes sweating all over and usually develops in adulthood. This is typically caused by an underlying medical condition.

Botox is FDA approved to treat primary focal hyperhidrosis of the underarms. Research has shown an 82-87% decrease in sweating! It is administered by injecting tiny amounts just under the skin in a grid pattern, using a very small needle. A topical anesthetic can be applied prior to the procedure for comfort if desired. It typically takes 100 units of Botox, 50 units on each side to achieve good results. Treatment is temporary and will last anywhere from 4-12 months.
